INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING
If you are struggling with anything from feeling stuck to feeling hopeless, high quality therapy can be invaluable. I specialize in helping people heal and recover from illness like depression and anxiety, but also in coping with the stressors we invariably face in life. Therapy can help us identify the gap between the life that we are currently living, and the life that was want to be living. I will work with you to develop a unique treatment plan that is designed to help you bridge that gap and achieve your treatment goals. My style is relaxed, warm, genuine, transparent, and professional.
COLLATERAL INTEGRATION
In individual therapy, the focus of therapy is on the individual. However, in some circumstances it can be extremely helpful to integrate a partner or family member into the therapy process to help the individual identify goals and objectives which may be critical to their overall progress. In these cases, the collateral is only integrated into the therapy process with the consent and support of the patient. Their integration may span one or multiple sessions, but the focus of treatment remains on the individual patient (vs. in couples therapy where the focus of treatment is shared across both partners).
COUPLES THERAPY
All couples experience conflict - sometimes severe enough to cause significant distress and unhappiness for one or both people in the relationship. Not all couples are equipped with the skills and strategies to resolve their conflicts in a collaborative and affirming way. Effective couples therapy can help us learn to communicate our feelings and needs in a way that increases our chances of being satisfied in our relationship. I believe a good couples therapist will help both partners hold themselves accountable for their own contribution to the dynamics that exist in their relationship. We can then identify what can be changed in order to get different results - hopefully, results which align with our goals.
Therapeutic Specializations
DEPRESSION
Depression is extremely common and can be manifested is several combinations of symptoms such that not all depressive presentations look the same. Many people struggle to overcome or even manage chronic or treatment-resistant depression because they have been treated with a one-size-fits all approach. I specialize in helping people that have struggled in past treatment by utilizing a customized approach that blends elements of cognitive, behavioral, mindfulness, and interpersonal therapy in whatever combination is most suited to the individual patient's history, symptoms, and present circumstances.
STRESS & TRAUMA
I have extensive expertise in helping people navigate their lives after trauma. Whether you are struggling with severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), or less-debilitating but still serious psychological impacts from traumatic experiences, I can help you reconnect the life you want to live. For most people struggling with PTSD, I am a strong believer in the benefits of Prolonged Exposure Therapy. It has an extensive body of research supporting it as one of the most effective forms of therapy for PTSD.
ANGER MANAGEMENT
Anger is a natural and normal emotion. But if we are not prepared to recognize our frustration and anger as it builds, we may struggle to control the behavior anger can inspire. This behavior is what causes problems for us, and learning how to separate our behavior from our emotions is critical to developing lasting strategies for managing and overcoming anger.
ANXIETY
Though anxiety is a normal and sometimes helpful emotion, when we are faced with the possibility that something bad could happen to us or someone we love, it can spiral out of control and lead to all kinds of problems. Therapy can help us develop greater insight into the sources of our anxiety and confront these fears so that we can get back to living the life we want to live. Different presentations call for different treatment approaches, and I have experience helping people with a wide array of anxiety symptoms and causes. In some cases, we may be able to recognize our fears are not founded in reality, but we can feel unable to control them. In other instances, our anxiety can be driven by real life circumstances. This is particularly the case in patients who are struggling with health complications, or even more so, who have children that have health complications. Few things are more anxiety provoking than the possibility of our death or the death of our loved ones. I help people differentiate unnecessary or excess anxiety from anxiety that is unavoidable or even useful. In the former case, we work to overcome it. In the latter case, we learn to use it and manage it.
PARENTING DIFFICULTIES
Most people want what is best for their children and care deeply about their children's wellbeing and outcomes. However, when we experience obstacles or difficulty in parenting our children, we can feel helpless and desperate for answers. In some case professional help for your child may be important or even necessary to help them overcome their problems and achieve their goals. And yet in many other cases, a skilled therapist can help a parent recognize how their own behavior and dynamics can be highly impactful to their child's struggles. One of my specialities is in working with parents to identify whether there are changes they may be able to make in their own approach which might benefit their children or help to resolve recent or long-standing issues.
